Omegle has officially shut down after 14 years on the internet
Popular video chat site Omegle is no more. After a long battle against attempted censorship, the site’s creator has shut it down.
Omegle is somewhat of a contradiction in that it is both unifying and divisive. In theory, it’s a site designed to connect random users in video calls to help form friendships. In practice, it’s sifting through a group of hung-out adult men in the hope of finding someone to chat with their loved ones.
When used appropriately it can bring happiness with amazing meetings and positive interactions that boost self-esteem. On the other side of the coin, Omegle can be a tool for racism or unwanted exposure that will get you banned from Twitch.
Because of that particular side of the coin, many organizations have recently launched a campaign against this site, considering it unsafe for minors who use it. It ended on November 8 when Omegle founder Leif Kay-Brooks announced in a heartfelt message that he was shutting down the site.

In the communication, Brooks detailed his views on the “persistent attacks” against the site and its ultimate end. He started by describing his journey in life and the positive impact of Omegle.
“For years, people have used Omegle to explore foreign cultures; receiving advice about their lives from impartial third parties; And to help reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation,” Brooks explained. Conversely, he also acknowledged the harmful misuse of Omegle.

Brooks said, “Virtually every tool can be used for good or bad, and this is especially true of communication tools, because of their innate flexibility.” However, he was strongly against the idea of completely eliminating something that had the potential for good, simply because it also had the potential for harm.
“Analogies are a limited tool, but the physical-world analogy could shut down Central Park because crime happens there,” he explained. “Or perhaps more provocatively, destroying the universe because it contains evil.”

“Dad, what was it like seeing random genitalia on Omegle?”
Brooks claimed that the “stress and expense” of fighting to keep Omegle afloat ultimately weakened him and exposed a larger and more significant conflict. “The battle for Omegle has been lost, but the war against the Internet continues,” he said, warning of a cleaner experience “largely focused on passive consumption.”
“From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who has used Omegle for positive purposes, and to everyone who has contributed to the success of the site in any way. I’m so sorry I couldn’t fight for you,” Brooks concluded.
